Tony Bytheway Legacy

Lifelong angler Tony Bytheway sadly died in August 2014.

Tony was in France, doing what he loved to do, fishing with his best mate, Neil, who just happened to be his brother, when he unexpectedly passed away.

Tony's family thought  that it would be fitting for donations at his funeral to go to benefit young anglers. To this end they decided to donate the money collected to the Young Anglers Project.

We at the Young Anglers Project were saddened to hear of Tony's untimely death and aim to put his legacy to good use by encouraging and supporting more young people to take up and develop their skills in angling.

R.I.P. Tony Bytheway

Newent Community School Team Crowned Schools National Angling Champions 2014

A team of five students from Newent Community School have become the 2014 Schools National Angling Champions.  They took on teams from across the country, including contenders from the northern homelands of match angling, to gain the title at Hallcroft Fisheries, Repton.

During the 4 hour match, each team member fishes in one of five sections against the other teams. Points are awarded based on the weight of fish caught in each section, with the team that accumulates the most points declared the winners.

In a field of 80 contenders, Matt Anderson, a year 11 student at the school, won the individual title as well as his section, with a weight of 17kg 40g. An additional section win by Harvey Shayle, a section second  place from George Organ and strong performances from Jack Cleverley and Tom Cleverley  secured the title for the school with a tremendous score of 72 out of a possible 80

Kevin Timney, from the school ,commented:

‘All five of the team fished brilliantly; they listened to advice, concentrated, and stuck to the task in hand for the full four hours of the match.

To win this competition really does need every team member to put in a top performance and they certainly did. They were very worthy winners.’

YAP coaches Rob Neale and Kevin Timney helped the team in their preparation and were there on the day to support the team.

achieved a fantastic second place in the Schools National Fishing

this year saw a total of 30 teams from 22 schools entered. The
competition was held at the Daiwa Hallcroft Fishery in north east
Nottinghamshire with teams consisting of 5 anglers fishing a four
hour match. The competition was won by Valley School from Worksop who
also won the competition last year.

The Newent B team were; Liam Parker,
Ed John, Connor Barber-Starke, Ben Arkell
and Mike Reynolds.

The A Team came a very respectable 10th

fishing on their home turf.

Mention should also be given to Jack
Davies
and Ben Arkell who won their respective sections.

The Young Anglers Project grew from the
involvement of Rob England with Newent Community School. The
relationship between members of YAP and the school have continued
over the years. A weekly school angling club is run and regular
junior matched are held. For several years the school has entered
teams in the Schools National Fishing Competition, this year
achieving their best ever result.
